Maternity nurses
A maternity nurse provides essential care, advice, and emotional support to families adjusting to life with a new baby. They can be booked for a one-off day, a few days a week, or up to 24 hours a day, six days a week. Their role includes caring for the newborn, offering guidance on feeding, bathing, sleeping, clothing, and establishing routines, as well as physically assisting with these tasks as needed. They also help integrate the baby into the family, particularly when there are older siblings.

Helping you get into a routine
If the baby is breast-fed, the maternity nurse will observe, encourage, and advise as necessary or if the baby is bottle-fed, the maternity nurse will ensure that all feeding equipment is clean, sterilised, and fit-for-use day and night. The maternity nurse is responsible for feeding the baby day and night and for establishing the best feeding routines, in line with those agreed with the parents. They should resettle the baby after feeds as and when required to allow the mother time to rest.
